Frequently asked questions about seasonal allergic rhinitis

Where can I find information about Allegra® products for children?

Allegra-D is for patients who are 12 years of age and older. You can find out about options for younger patients here.

Allegra-D is used for treating the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis. These symptoms include
  • Sneezing
  • Stuffy nose (congestion)
  • Runny nose (rhinorrhea)
  • Itchy nose/throat/roof of mouth
  • Itchy, watery, red eyes

How long will it take before I start to feel symptom relief?

Allegra-D works fast. You may see results in as little as
1 hour.

Does Allegra-D treat indoor allergies?

Allegra-D is only indicated to relieve seasonal allergy symptoms caused by outdoor pollen and mold.

How does Allegra-D work?

Allegra-D uses an advanced method called osmotic technology. This is what makes it long lasting. Each pill is covered in 2 layers. The outer layer contains fexofenadine HCl and it is released immediately into your body so it can begin working as quickly as possible.

The inner layer is a semipermeable membrane surrounding a core containing the other ingredient, pseudoephedrine. (Semipermeable means that it allows some water to pass into the pill.)

Each pill has a tiny hole drilled into it with a laser. As water enters the pill through the semipermeable membrane, pressure slowly builds, which pushes pseudoephedrine out through the laser-drilled hole in a smooth and controlled manner.

What is pollen?

Pollen is a fine, powdery substance made up of countless microscopic grains. It is passed from a male plant (or male portion of a plant) to its female counterpart where seeds are formed. This is how plants reproduce. Pollen is carried by the wind, insects, birds, and other animals. The pollens most likely to cause allergies come from trees, grass, and ragweed.

What is ragweed?

Ragweed is a common weed in the daisy family. It can be found all over the United States, especially in the Eastern and Midwestern states. Each ragweed plant can produce up to a billion pollen grains a year.

When will my allergies strike?

It depends on which allergen triggers your symptoms. Most plants begin pollinating in the spring. However, ragweed releases its pollen in late summer and early fall.

Once exposed, how long until I start experiencing symptoms?

You may start to experience symptoms immediately following exposure to an allergen.

What time of day will symptoms be most severe?

Seasonal allergy symptoms are typically worse in the morning, when pollen counts are at their highest.

Is there anything else I can do to protect myself against exposure to allergies?

Yes! There are lots of things you can do. Here you will find many helpful tips that tell you how.

Will my health care plan cover Allegra-D?

According to the latest figures, over 88% of all insurance claims for Allegra-D were accepted. Speak to your pharmacist for details regarding your plan.
